SOMA

"When I discovered Soma it was like coming back home."
Ayala Serfaty, 2005

I am fascinated by Mrs. Serfaty's creations in general, and have been a constant fan of her work's since my first visit at 200 Lex. On exhibit at Museum Beelden Aan Zee, in Den Haag, Netherlands for a period of three months, is her newest artwork from the SOMA series (Soma is Greek for "body", but Hebrew reference for "blindness"). The lighted "body" has been created by the Aqua Creations team out of woven and entwined filaments of glass encased in a skin-like polymer membrane.

Whether interpreted as primordial light, or the metaphorical light inside our own bodies, SOMA structures are, like all of Mrs. Serfaty's works, highly organic and their symbolism can be further "dissected' in a number of ways, but underneath and above it all is the pure, unadulterated beauty of the finished product.
